A man smuggling marijuana into the United States from Mexico was killed early Monday morning west of Green Valley when bandits confronted a group of drug runners, authorities said.
The manÕs body was found Thursday morning by U.S. Border Patrol agents using a dog for the search, said Rob Daniels, an agency spokesman.
The search was initiated Wednesday night based on information from two witnesses, Daniels said. The Mexican Consulate in Tucson relayed information stating the man was part of a group carrying marijuana when they were attacked on Monday, Daniels said. The rest of the group went to the Mexican Consulate and told officials there of the killing.
The body appears to be that of a young adult male. No identification was found, Daniels said.
About 7:50 a.m. Thursday, the Border Patrol agents notified the Pima County SheriffÕs Department that the body had been found in the desert, about five miles west of Calle Tres and Montana Vista.
Homicide detectives were called to the scene by the responding deputies based on the suspicious nature of the death, said Deputy Dawn Hanke, a department spokeswoman. The man suffered obvious trauma, but because of decomposition of the body, detectives are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Daniels said itÕs unclear who attacked the group of smugglers and that the sheriffÕs department and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will continue the investigation.
